About Anchors Camp
Anchors Camp was founded in 2020 as a space where boys and young men can get the perspective and guidance they need to create their own path to success. Founders Traci Carter and Jim Newfrock believe that an anchor of new skills, new perspectives, and confidence along with some support can bridge culture gaps and erase barriers. Anchors Camp provides a framework that lets young men discover their own interests and passions — all in a beautiful, fresh air environment.

Our vision is to enrich and transform the lives of young men by exposing them to new people, places, and experiences. We believe that inner-city kids need and deserve support and guidance — an anchor — to explore and achieve their own unique aspirations and that school, while important, isn’t the only pathway to success.
Our mission is to provide an opportunity that introduces young men to a range of activities, hands-on learning, and skill-building. Campers’ curiosity will be sparked as they learn valuable lessons in teamwork, leadership, communication, accountability, and community.
In addition to traditional summer camp experiences, such as hiking, and fishing, campers will develop lifelong skills in various occupational trades, such as carpentry, plumbing, motor vehicle maintenance, electrical installation and repair, and painting. But the biggest takeaway from Anchors Camp is a sense of hope that lasts long after camp ends.

Our Founders’ Story
In July of 2020 Semaj Carter, brother of Anchors Camp co-founder Traci Carter, passed away, a victim of street violence. While grieving his brother, Traci reached out to his coach who then connected him with Jim Newfrock. Together, they talked about how Semaj did not get the support and exposure to other perspectives he needed to change his living situation.
Jim understood; he had long been thinking of ways to teach young men the skills they need to thrive in life. Together, Traci and Jim worked quickly to recruit campers and counselors who were close to Semaj, and in August 2020, the first Anchors Camp session was held in New York State.
The Anchors Camp Experience
During each Anchors Camp session, we offer a variety of activities designed to encourage campers to build confidence by trying new things, including:
Trade skills classes in many different fields like basic carpentry, auto mechanics, plumbing, electrical installation and repair, and painting
Wilderness skills, hiking, adventure courses, and fishing
Special activities such as golf, overnight camping, cookouts, and trips to local colleges, farms, and restaurants
Campers will also enjoy free time to explore their own interests. They will also be encouraged to help with meals and clean-up.
“Each day my perspective changed for the better…”
